Katy Appleton is one of the UK's top yoga teachers. She has been practising since 1995 and qualified as a teacher in 1999. She teaches classes, retreats and private clients from all over the world and famously instructed Geri Halliwell when she began practising yoga in 2003.

Together they created the best selling yoga DVD 'Geri Yoga', which broke all records, and has since authored numerous books and DVDs including her Yogaworks collaboration with bodyinbalance.tv

Katy says
I trained as a ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet School and then spent eight years dancing professionally with some of the major ballet companies. To balance the very extreme physical side to ballet I began to do simple breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques that helped me stay centred.

It seemed a natural progression to me from dance to yoga. In 1998 I qualified as a yoga teacher. Having been a dancer I have found that this has given me an extra ordinary vision on how bodies move which has been invaluable to my students and me, especially with their posture and alignment. I have studied some many styles and forms of yoga and draw from them in my teaching, vinyasa yoga expands my entire being, as it feels very much like dancing to me, yoga in movement.

When I'm teaching I merge these beautiful methods together to suit the needs of the students and courses I'm working with, after all we are all different aren't we? I have been blessed to have met and studied with many wonderful teachers world wide, especially my sweet Shiva Rea. I bow at their lotus feet for their path of self realization and unwavering truth and for passing it on so eloquently and peacefully.

What are you inspired by?
My Breath, sweet soul rocking grooves, music just opens my soul. People with a twinkle in their eyes, Tejas, the light that shines from within. Laughter with tonnes of love and my dear family and friends.

Why yoga?
It brings me home.

If yoga did not exist what exercise would you turn to?
Ballet and skiing

What music do you listen to?
Coldplay, Café Del Mar, Regina Spektor, Snow Patrol, Keane, Razorlight, Sarah McLachlan, oh the list is endless!!!

Favourite Asana?
Downward Dog, gotta love that dog...
Shoulderstands at dusk
Headstands for presence!

Hardest Asana?
Right now I'm loving the challenge Galavasana, that cheeky arm balance!

Words of Wisdom?
Remember the precious present, there's no where else to be.

Ideal Weekend?
Being with family & friends, maybe out dancing, chilled ones with lie ins and the cinema!

Favorite food and drink?
Roast dinners, mashed potatoes, and gravy!!! Oooo and sushi!!! To drink? Hot water and lemon and for a naughty drink Vodka lime and soda!

Dislikes?
Being in a rush
